How do I set the Web Filter so that it can handle Forward Proxy and Inline Traffic?

Answer:

Please follow the setup found in the TechLib article regarding Inline Pass-Through (Transparent) Mode Deployment to configure the filtering for the inline users. For any user that you want to be set as a proxy user, you will need to set their browser’s proxy to use Web Filter IP on port 3128.

A couple things to take note regarding this type of setup:

  1. Proxy users must be able to reach the Web filter’s IP address.
  2. The web filter will not be able to pass client IP information to the upstream device. This will mean that the upstream device will see all HTTP and HTTPS traffic coming from the Web Filter.
  3. If you have a site-to-site VPN on your firewall, and you want those remote office users to proxy traffic to the web filter, be sure that you have the Basic > IP Configuration page's Enable Proxy on WAN setting set to “Yes.”

Note: This is the type of setup you will want to use if you want to handle hybrid authentication. Please follow the TechLib article named Integrating the Barracuda Web Filter With a User Authentication Service for information regarding what hybrid authentication is.
