Why am I seeing the error 6 "No more handles..." from Yosemite Server Backup?

Solution #00004199

Scope:

This solution applies to Yosemite Server Backup.

Answer:

The error 6 is produced when Yosemite Server Backup is trying to open a file and the OS runs out of file handles. A file handle is number that the operating system assigns temporarily to a file when it is opened. The operating system uses the file handle internally when accessing the file. A special area of main memory is reserved for file handles and the size of this area determines how many files can be open at once.

When this error occurs there are two possible actions to take:

  1. Determine what application is holding file handles open and either close it or prevent it from holding so many open.
  2. Increase the Maximum file handle count.

The method of increasing the file handle count differs from one operating system to another.
