This solution applies to Yosemite Server Backup 8.7.01 and newer

Answer:

These are the settings to get Gmail to work with Yosemite backup utilizing Gmail as opposed to an SMTP server that requires authentication.

Open Yosemite Server Backup and navigate to File > Domain Configuration > Email Settings and enter the below SMTP e-mail settings:

Server address: gmail-smtp-in.L.google.com
Port: 25
From Address: admin@server.com

Also, you need to go to have a valid Gmail e-mail account for the destination of the e-mail. There are a number of very good step-by-step setups in Gmail. Make sure that you have your Gmail account completely set up & set up to forward your mail to the desired location.
