Exchange Web Servers (EWS) Deprecation and Barracuda Cloud Archiving Service

  • Last updated on

Microsoft is retiring the Exchange Web Services (EWS) API for Exchange Online, meaning some applications that currently rely on EWS will need to migrate to newer APIs. The deprecation is planned to take full effect in October 2026 with published guidance on deprecating EWS and transitioning to newer Microsoft Graph-based solutions. For more information, see the Microsoft article, Deprecation of Exchange Web Services in Exchange Online.

What This Means for Barracuda Cloud Archiving Service (BCAS)

Our current Cloud Archiving Service implementation uses EWS. As part of the broader industry move away from EWS, BCAS will align with Microsoft’s timeline and migrate to the new API when it becomes available with the necessary functionality from Microsoft. This ensures continued compatibility and security for storing and archiving data.

When we complete the rollout of the updated implementation (expected in 2026), existing BCAS customers will be prompted to re-authenticate. This is a standard security step during transitions to new API integrations and helps ensure continued access to your archived data.

  • When will the new authentication/migration occur?
The migration is aligned with Microsoft’s timeline and will be rolled out in 2026, ahead of the EWS deprecation, with clear communications.
